Lange Nering East
The Netherlands, Emmeloord
On commission for the Municipality of the Northeast polder, KuiperCompagnons drew up an image quality plan for the city centre of Emmeloord in 2006. This was updated in 2008. At the same time Lange Nering West was redeveloped to a design by the architect Sprietsma. With this redevelopment the “tone” was set and the ambitions were determined for the remaining part of the city centre area.
The redevelopment of the Lange Nering East area was addressed in the second phase. This part of the shopping area calls for special attention in respect of the individual retail pavilions and the roofing. K4 Architecten from Emmeloord drew up an ambitious plan in collaboration with KuiperCompagnons as the supervisor, in which a restructuring of the retail pavilions was the solution with new transparent canopies for the shops. A redevelopment plan was drawn up by KuiperCompagnons for the public area of Lange Nering East.
The redevelopment plan portrays a clear picture of the coherence of the various areas, in which the parking facilities, in particular, are given special attention. Aspects such as paving materials, the draining of rainwater and the lighting and street furnishings are elaborated and detailed.
The concept assumes a clear demarcation of Kettingplein [square], a restructuring of the individual retail pavilions with space for catering establishments and/or a public terrace, and an integrated redevelopment of the shopping precinct and the parking facilities. An endeavour has been made to optimise the capacity for parking at Lange Nering East, so that the green courtyards between the flats can be maintained and safeguarded from becoming parking facilities for the city centre. However, they do make for nice walking routes between the future parking facilities along 'Paardenmarkt' (horse market) and the shops.
