Walcheren Hospital – small extensions
NL, Vlissingen
In anticipation of large-scale changes to the hospital, a number of small-scale pilot projects has started, to serve as research examples of how to approach parts of a hospital within a larger context. This project addresses locations of acute bottlenecks in the organisation.
New reception desks have been placed in two positions and colour is used to clarify the space. The new, larger reception desk near the centrally located Radiology Department bears an icon in the form of an apple with a luminous background. The iconography makes this location an orientation point. The new reception desk at the Intensive Care/Coronary Care Unit has been given a yellow colour, with an orange back wall, to simulate sunny surroundings.
Colour combined with specific forms is a second feature promoting recognisability of a department. A glass mosaic on a slightly curved wall adds life to the new and attractive waiting room for patients with heart failure. A wall in the form of a circle is one part of the infusion space for Oncology. The inner area now cosy and comfortable with its television and atmospheric lighting. The outside space features sculptures and is missing the hackneyed hospital back wall. The reception desk has a clearly defined function in the corridor and is combined with an integrated service unit.
Both personnel and patients are madly enthusiastic. Something is happening; change is in the air. Ways of treating people are altering in this friendly, familiar environment you can identify with as a human being.
